Field Notes from the Wild
Few animals embody mystery quite like the black leopard. Often called the legendary “black panther,” it is not a separate species, but a rare melanistic leopard whose dark coat can conceal the familiar rosette pattern until the light reveals it.
In the dense forests of Asia, melanism can provide a natural advantage, allowing these extraordinary cats to disappear almost effortlessly into shadow. In Africa, where black leopards are far less commonly encountered, their presence feels almost mythical.
Photographing this remarkable female offered a rare glimpse into that hidden world. Moving between darkness and light, her coat shifts from seemingly pure black to reveal the subtle patterns beneath—an animal both concealed and revealed by her surroundings.
She is not simply black. She is shadow, pattern, power, and grace—visible for a moment before disappearing once again into the wild.

Deep in Brazil’s Northern Pantanal, near Porto Jofre, a jaguar pauses and fixes its gaze directly upon us. There is no urgency in the moment—only the quiet confidence of an animal completely at home in its world.
Powerful yet remarkably elusive, the jaguar moves through the Pantanal’s rivers, forests, and wetlands with an almost effortless presence. For a brief moment, the roles seem reversed. We are no longer simply observing the jaguar. The jaguar is observing us.
That unwavering gaze transforms the encounter into something more intimate—a fleeting connection between the wild and those fortunate enough to witness it.
For a moment, we entered its world—and it chose to acknowledge ours.

Across the frozen silence of the Arctic, a polar bear mother walks beside her three nearly grown cubs. For years, she has guided them across the ice—teaching them where to travel, how to hunt, and how to survive in one of the most unforgiving environments on Earth.
But their time together is nearing its end. Soon, the cubs will leave their mother and begin their own solitary journeys across the Arctic.
The Last Walk Together captures something rarely seen in nature: the quiet transition between dependence and independence, between family and separation. Four bears moving together across the ice, perhaps for one of the final times.
They have traveled this far together. From here, each must find their own way.
