King of Bwindi - Artist: Michael Mucci

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda, 2022

In the ancient forests of Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a mountain gorilla sits with a quiet authority that needs no display of strength. Powerful yet composed, his presence seems to command the forest around him.

To encounter a mountain gorilla in the wild is to experience something deeply personal. There is an intelligence in the eyes, an awareness in the expression, and a calm dignity that makes the distance between observer and subject seem remarkably small.

King of Bwindi captures that sense of presence—a portrait not simply of strength, but of wisdom, resilience, and the fragile future of one of the world’s most extraordinary animals.

In his forest kingdom, true power is found not in dominance, but in presence.
