The Last Eagle Hunters of Mongolia

by Katrin Weiss

The rich tradition of Kazakh eagle hunters in the breathtaking landscapes of western Mongolia is a captivating tale of the profound connection between hunter and golden eagle. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Altai Mountains, this ancient practice reveals not just a way of life but a deep-seated respect for nature. During our journey, we ventured to Mongolia with the primary goal of seeking the elusive snow leopard, yet we discovered so much more than we anticipated. We were fortunate to spend nearly a week immersed in the life of one of the last true eagle hunters and his family, gaining insights into their extraordinary world and the timeless bond they share with their majestic birds.

A Beautiful Kasakh Family

The eagle hunter and his daughter each had their own majestic eagles, which were not just birds but cherished members of their family. These magnificent creatures lived alongside them, sharing their home and their lives. During our visit, we had the incredible opportunity to join them on a thrilling hunt, where they demonstrated the remarkable skills and deep bond required to be a successful eagle hunter.

Hunting Together in the Altai

As we wandered through the rugged terrains of Mongolia, we encountered not only the breathtaking vistas but also the rich tapestry of stories woven by the local tribes. Each encounter revealed a unique perspective on life, where ancient customs blend seamlessly with the rhythms of nature. The vibrant colors of traditional garments against the stark landscapes painted a picture of resilience and beauty, reminding us that every journey is an opportunity to connect with the soul of a place.

Shelter on the Endless Plain

Our time spent with the eagle hunter and his family was nothing short of extraordinary. They welcomed us with open arms, sharing their rich culture and traditions. The hunter expressed his deep concern that eagle hunting, once a vital part of their way of life, is increasingly becoming a mere tourist attraction. He shared his worries about the younger generation, who seem eager to leave their ancestral homes for the allure of city life, seeking modern comforts over their cherished traditions. As we watched his daughter, who is diligently training to become a skilled hunter herself, we couldn't help but wonder if she would carry on this legacy. The future of their traditions hangs in the balance, and only time will tell.
