The 6 Largest Cats in the Wild (We missed number 7)

by

As photographers, we continually strive to set ambitious goals in our pursuit of that perfect shot, and one of our most significant objectives was to capture the breathtaking beauty of the seven largest wild cats before they disappear from our planet. So, what are these magnificent seven? They include 1) Tigers, 2) Lions, 3) Jaguars, 4) Puma or Mountain Lions, 5) Leopards, 6) Cheetahs, and 7) Snow Leopards. Capturing images of these elusive creatures is no small feat, as it involves extensive expeditions across diverse landscapes. Requiring journeys to remote locations in India, the vast savannas of Africa, incredible landscapes in South America and the rugged mountains of Mongolia, each adventure not only tests our skills but also deepens our appreciation for the majesty and fragility of these remarkable animals in their natural habitats.

On the Hunt

From the majestic jaguar prowling through the waters of Brazil in search of its next meal to the serene leopard resting comfortably in a sausage tree in Kenya, Kati and I have been endlessly captivated by the world of big cats. Each encounter reveals the unique beauty and raw power of these incredible animals, leaving us in awe of their elegance and grace in the wild. Our passion for these magnificent creatures has only deepened over time, inspiring us to learn more about their behaviors, habitats, and the vital roles they play in their ecosystems.

Seeing 19 majestic tigers in India and 8 elusive pumas in the breathtaking landscape of Patagonia was an extraordinary experience that truly left us in awe of nature’s wonders. It is a privilege to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitats and to feel a deep connection with the wild. As we observed their grace and power we were reminded of the importance of conservation efforts that protect these incredible animals and their ecosystems. Being in their presence was not just exhilarating but also a profound reminder of the beauty and fragility of our planet.

Having spent years living in the diverse landscapes of Africa and having returned multiple times, Kati and I have had the privilege of witnessing the majesty of a couple of hundred lions in their natural habitat, along with some truly breathtaking experiences observing cheetahs in action, including the thrilling moments when they are stealthily hunting their prey.

As passionate photographers, we have found it incredibly rewarding to encounter these magnificent animals in their natural habitats and explore diverse ecosystems around the globe. However, one elusive creature still remains on our list—the seventh largest cat, the snow leopard. Kati and I embarked on an adventurous journey to Mongolia, braving frigid temperatures of -30 degrees and fierce winds reaching 30 mph. We scaled the rugged mountains in search of this rare feline. Along the way, we discovered numerous tracks, stumbled upon a cave where they seek refuge, and even witnessed a kill site, yet we still did not catch a glimpse of the mythical snow leopard. Our time in Mongolia was filled with unforgettable experiences and friendships, but sadly, we returned without any photographic evidence of the snow leopard. This journey serves as a poignant reminder that, as photographers, no matter how meticulous our planning may be, nature often has its own agenda, and outcomes can sometimes elude us despite our best efforts.
